Playing Catch Up...

Hello all...

I am back in Florida for a couple of days to hang out at the cozy cone before Bethany and I take off to Seattle for Christmas! Its been a while since my last post because honestly, it has been a mind numbing pace that we have been working at. Were getting it all done though, which is great! I have begun to make some pretty good friends on the new program and finding my way just fine and thankfully. Its always hard joining a program mid-stride, trying to play catch up, all the while having nobody that you are already friends with to hang out with and take your mind off the stressful day. By the end of the trip though, there were a couple of people I really enjoyed hanging out with andwe managed to have some fun.

On Saturday the 18 of Dec, I got my first chance to fly in a test aircraft. I got to fly on this humongous 747 and be an active part of the days test events up in the sky, sometimes at 43,000 ft .85 mach. It was really fun and a definite thrill to be up there where not many people are allowed. The engine performed as expected and after a lengthy 7 hours, we were back on the ground. I got to also be in the cockpit for takeoff and landing and let me tell you, there is nothing like it at all in this world. I dont even know how to describe it to someone who hasnt done it. It felt like we were trying to land a ten story building on a runway. It was one of those experiences I will never forget for as long as I live.

We had another flight on Sunday which went well too and by Monday afternoon we wrapped up paperwork and all said goodbye to each other from Waco, TX. I attached a couple of pictures of the engines while up in the air, the cockpit, and a couple of fun pictures from a couple of nights out. I figured the pictures were a little more entertaining than me sitting here rambling on!

Like I said, I got back to Florida last night and I am glad to be back for a couple of days! Bethany and I are going to pack up tomorrow and hit the road again to Seattle for a much needed Christmas break. I cant wait to spend some time with her and her family after missing her so much these last couple of weeks! I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And if I dont post again, Ill see you next year!!! Heres a couple videos of takeoff and landing in a Boeing 747......

When in TX......

Good morning all,

We've got the day off today from our busy schedule down here in Waco and its much deserved. We have all been at work every day until at least 7 trying to get this FTB airplane ready to fly next week. Things are looking good and we got enough accomplished so that we could have the day off today. Wooohooo! So I think Im going to spend the day online, doing some shopping for Christmas, as I wont be home to shop at all before the holiday and next week here will be crazy! And then watch some football for the rest of the day!!!
Last night we all went out with some of the people who work at the L3 site here who have been working on our airplane for us. We went to one of the guys buddies steak house. This place was great and screamed "Teaxs" all over it. It was a hole in the wall with cold beer and really great steak!!! What more could a couple of guys that have worked hard all week ask for! Anyways, just thought I would share some pictures and wish everyone a happy Sunday.

Before I went out last night, Bethany was getting ready to go out for Donalyn's birthday. Of course, I wished I was there, but pictures like the one below, make it better! Sending me a little love from the cozy cone! haha
See ya,
Chris

Dude, wheres my truck??

Hey ya'll!!

So, Im down here in TX and its the land of ranch hand bumpers, mud tires, and lift kits. Being here reminds me of all the times I traveled here in the past to find myself a sweet pick 'em up truck! The big F350's, Silverado 3500's, and Ram 3500's are all over the place with their diesels roaring. It just really makes me miss my big 'ol dually at home! Speaking of my truck at home, I left it at Bethany's while Im gone on this adventure and I got a picture message this morning of her driving down the road to work today!!! Okay, how awesome is that?! It totally made my day, knowing Bethany was rocking the dually all around St Augustine!!

Anways, I just wanted to share that I missed my truck and that I have the very coolest girlfriend ever!!!

Have a great night!

Dont Mess With Texas!

Hello all,
Well today was my first day of work.....again, down here at the L3 site in Waco, TX with the Rolls Royce Boeing 747 Flying Test Bed. Now I cant go too much into detail about activities down here, but it is waaaaay cool!!! As some of you may know, that airplane is a HUGE double decker aircraft. I got on it today and it felt like I was in a building nevermind an airplane. It is still amazing to me anytime I see one of these airplanes that it can actually fly. Just one of the wings on this thing is equal to about the size of 2 of the E-2D aircraft put nose to tail. Its immense! Its powered by the normal Rolls Royce RB211 series engines except one of them is removed and we retro-fit one of the RR Trent 1000 engines onto it for flight testing. This is what a lot of engine manufacturers do when they are certifying an engine for service in the commercial industry. I learned a lot about the engine today just by shadowing a couple of the guys here and got involved with the activities leading up to the flights that will be coming up in the near future here.

While out on the flight line here today, there was a moment where it was a little bitter sweet for me. In the background, there was a P3 Orion performing engine tests. At PAX River and Norfolk, where I often visited for work on the E-2D's there were always P3's running and doing some sort of engine testing, so just the sound of that airplane with the smoky cloud around it from the tried and true RR T56-A-425 engines on it reminded me again of all the good times of being at SAMC, PAX, and Norfolk over the last couple of years.

Im meeting lots of new people and preparing myself to get used to a different way of daily activities in the commercial industry as compared to the military side. Its going to be a ride and it will probably be a bumpy one sometimes, but Ive never been afraid to get a little mud on the tires and I would have always wondered about this opportunity if I didnt take it. Im hoping for the best with all this, as there is still a little bit of confusion going on, but I know its manageable, and things will settle out real soon. I constantly think of my best friends Marc and Jamie and how they werent even barely into a year of marriage and they basically uprooted their lives in Indy, sold their cars, rented out their brand new house, left the dog with the folks, and moved to the UK. I still dont know how you guys did it, but more power to ya! Im going to try to follow your lead here......

Anyways, thats all Ive got for today. Have a great night!

Sleepless in Seattle

Hello all....Like the title to the blog? I thought it fit pretty well, as you never know where Im going to be I guess....I never thought I would start a blog, but I thought this was as an appropriate time as any. And even more appropriate because I am currently using airborne wifi 36,000 feet in the air on an Alaska Air flight traveling to TX for my job. Its funny how as a little kid, I was always so enthralled by airplanes and now they are such a big part of my life. I am the farthest away from anything I know now that I have moved to Seattle and feel like this will help me connect with with everything and everyone I left for this six month opportunity to work with Boeing on the 787 Dreamliner Aircraft.

For the past five years I have been traveling all over the east coast for my company, Rolls-Royce, as a flight test engineer for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. I am proud to have been a part of that program for so long, as it shaped me and taught me many things as a young professional. I would never trade the adventures and events that I have experienced and sometimes endured ;-). After living in 4 different states, having 9 different addresses in the past 5 years, being part of the initial development team for the T56-A-427A engines on the E-2D, then part of the flight test team, and finally then a production engineering rep, I have decided to take an opportunity with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Flight Test Team out here in Seattle, Washington....Exciting and scary all at the same time.

Falling back in time for a bit, there was one day in the past five years that was the single best day that I can remember. It was October 18th 2008. I met a truly amazing girl named Bethany. Some of you may know her ;-) We have been through it all in the past two years....good, bad, happy, sad, boring, exciting, and everything inbetween. It has been AWESOME!! Never have I been excited by a single person like I am with her. We have learned so much from each other and it feels so good to have someone as wonderful as her in my life. As you can imagine, that has been the toughest part of moving away from St Augustine, Florida. I have never had as many emotions as I did when I was leaving last Wednesday. And to be honest, it has been a really rough couple of days without her. I found myself so used to doing everything together and having a team mate and a best friend everyday. Someone I could depend on, trust, laugh with, cry with, curl up with, and just be with....For the next six months, I wont have that. I guess I didnt realize all of the ramifications this decision had in store for me. I have been so used to making snap decisions and taking opportunities on a whim, that I didnt stop to smell the roses and realize what I would be doing this time. With that, said, I love Seattle! I was so excited the first night I got there, but without Bethany, the better half of me is seriously missing. My smiles arent as big, my laughs arent as loud, and the hop in my step has faded. I know those things wont return until I am with Bethany again. Im not trying to be a bummer right now, I actually feel good, because for once, I have met someone who I unconditionally love and respect. If anything, this move has showed me that this is the girl I am supposed to be with the rest of my life purely for the fact that I feel like part of me is missing without her. Never have I felt like that before in any previous relationships. Its only been a couple of days, and it feels like months. Call me weak, or scared, or whatever you want to....I dont care. I love this girl and am missing my very best friend right now.

I got to Seattle on the perfect weekend! I flew into the city last Friday to a perfectly setting sun gleaming off of the mountains. It was beautiful. Getting to the city was pretty easy thanks to Mapquest, and before I knew it I was in front of my apartment on 1st Ave in downtown Seattle. My place is great! Im on the 13th floor and have a view of Elliot Harbor with the ferries coming in and out of port and a partial view of the city where I can see Quest and Safeco fields. Its an amazing view. The apartment has 2 pools, a jetted lap pool, saunas, jacuzzis, basketball court, and even a library!! Its awesome! I am three blocks from Pike Place Market...you know, where they throw the fish!!! I have walked to the original Starbucks in the Market every morning so far to get my morning fix of caffiene and tried a French bakery over the weekend that Bethany suggested to get a delicious croissant!!! They even have Christmas trees for sale in the market!!! I spent some time Friday night with Bethanys mom Lorinda which was nice, and then went and did some Christmas shopping with Ken (Bethanys dad) on Saturday! Sunday was great...I went tailgating with Ken and Brent (Bethanys brother) before the Seahawks game which was awesome!! I cant wait to go to the game against the St. Loius Rams on Dec 2nd with Bethany while she is here for Christmas!!!

My first day of work here on Monday was just like any other first day of work. Confusing! I spent my day setting up my computer, getting my phone, filling out paperwork for my badges, and getting ready for my trip to TX today. I will be in Waco, TX till Christmas time working with the Flying Test Bed team. Rolls-Royce owns a Boeing 747-200 in which we put one of our Dreamliner engines on and test while were up in the air. It should be really fun and really interesting!

Well, I think I wrote enough here today. Were still a couple hundred miles away from landing in TX and Im going to try to get some sleep up here in my home away from home...away from home. Ill try to keep you posted daily on the mischief and mayhem I find my self partaking in and share some of my thoughts with you all. Take care, fly safe...ill see you in TX!
