Dont Mess With Texas!

Hello all,
Well today was my first day of work.....again, down here at the L3 site in Waco, TX with the Rolls Royce Boeing 747 Flying Test Bed. Now I cant go too much into detail about activities down here, but it is waaaaay cool!!! As some of you may know, that airplane is a HUGE double decker aircraft. I got on it today and it felt like I was in a building nevermind an airplane. It is still amazing to me anytime I see one of these airplanes that it can actually fly. Just one of the wings on this thing is equal to about the size of 2 of the E-2D aircraft put nose to tail. Its immense! Its powered by the normal Rolls Royce RB211 series engines except one of them is removed and we retro-fit one of the RR Trent 1000 engines onto it for flight testing. This is what a lot of engine manufacturers do when they are certifying an engine for service in the commercial industry. I learned a lot about the engine today just by shadowing a couple of the guys here and got involved with the activities leading up to the flights that will be coming up in the near future here.

While out on the flight line here today, there was a moment where it was a little bitter sweet for me. In the background, there was a P3 Orion performing engine tests. At PAX River and Norfolk, where I often visited for work on the E-2D's there were always P3's running and doing some sort of engine testing, so just the sound of that airplane with the smoky cloud around it from the tried and true RR T56-A-425 engines on it reminded me again of all the good times of being at SAMC, PAX, and Norfolk over the last couple of years.

Im meeting lots of new people and preparing myself to get used to a different way of daily activities in the commercial industry as compared to the military side. Its going to be a ride and it will probably be a bumpy one sometimes, but Ive never been afraid to get a little mud on the tires and I would have always wondered about this opportunity if I didnt take it. Im hoping for the best with all this, as there is still a little bit of confusion going on, but I know its manageable, and things will settle out real soon. I constantly think of my best friends Marc and Jamie and how they werent even barely into a year of marriage and they basically uprooted their lives in Indy, sold their cars, rented out their brand new house, left the dog with the folks, and moved to the UK. I still dont know how you guys did it, but more power to ya! Im going to try to follow your lead here......

Anyways, thats all Ive got for today. Have a great night!

Chris
